'OUCH! My Tummy Hurts!'
"OUCH! My Tummy Hurts is intended to help inform children about the medical world. It is the first book in the ‘To the Doctors’ series that tells the tale of fictional characters going to the doctors to get their aches, pains or their medical problem treated. In this story, avid football player Oliver Price has a mysterious tummy ache and loss of appetite. This book follows him ‘to the doctors’ and throughout his medical journey towards making a full recovery from his diagnosis…"
Hello! My name, as you probably already know, is Areej. I’m twelve years old and I was born in the UK. I moved to Qatar when I was eight years old and I moved to Canada in June of 2021.
I’m sure you’re probably wondering how a twelve-year-old girl has possibly written a book on medicine? I was struck with the idea to write a story about surgery when my dad, who is a General Surgeon, was talking to me about his endeavours in the field of medical non-fiction. I have created a series, this being the first of hopefully many of books for children about medical problems and how they are dealt with.
I began my writing process when I was eleven. It was quite difficult and took a long time as I encountered many obstacles; the biggest one being attaining a realistic experience for a paediatric patient. Due to this, I had to go back and forth several times to correct medical scenes and make them as accurate as possible.
This book is aimed to help young people see the medical world and vicariously experience what being a paediatric patient feels like.
