In Paws Up, Joe Wenborne introduces us to Lucca, a lovable stray dog who finds himself on a race against time to protect a vulnerable fox and her cubs. What begins as a story of survival quickly turns into a gripping adventure, packed with danger, surprising alliances, and an impossible deal with a powerful figure from the animal underworld.
Blending high-stakes tension with moments of heart and humour, Paws Up explores what it means to be brave in the face of fear and to do the right thing, even when the odds are against you. With vivid characterisation and a voice full of warmth, Joe’s story is one that speaks to readers young and old.
In this Q&A, Joe shares the inspiration behind Lucca’s journey, the themes woven throughout the book, and the power of storytelling to reflect courage and kindness.

What inspired you to create the character of Lucca and tell his story?
I based Lucca's character on all the wonderful dogs I’ve shared my life with. A dog’s loyalty is unwavering, and when it comes to protecting those they love, they are as brave as any superhero. Lucca embodies the ideal of a reluctant hero. He is shy and struggles with feelings of impostor syndrome. Although Lucca is a large dog, he faces assumptions because of his size that he should naturally know what to do and take charge. However, he often feels the opposite.
Throughout the story, Lucca encounters many of the same challenges humans face, which makes him relatable and empathetic. There is a part of Lucca's character in all of us. His story serves as a reminder that we are not alone, that teamwork is crucial, and that it’s okay to make mistakes. We should never give up on those we love or on what we know is right.
The book balances adventure and emotion beautifully. How did you find that balance when writing?
The key to captivating readers is to make them care about the characters and take them on an emotional journey. Once this connection is established, the plot's twists and turns create excitement, and each obstacle becomes an exhilarating leap, plunging readers into a state of page-turning bliss. The balance of elements—adventure, humour, and emotion—enriches the story and enhances its appeal. Humour serves as a delightful contrast to the dramatic moments that occur, much like rain is needed to create a rainbow. A successful story requires both light and dark elements to resonate. As a children’s author, I aim to craft narratives that evoke a range of emotions, engaging readers throughout the story.
There’s a strong message about loyalty and doing the right thing. Was that a central theme for you from the start?
The idea that Lucca was essentially a good dog was always present, but his character evolved significantly throughout the story. I was eager to uncover whether Lucca was born a stray or abandoned and how he managed to survive on the streets. The concept of a fellowship or code among street creatures, based on trust and loyalty, added a fascinating layer to Lucca's character development.
The idea of a deal with the head cat of the underworld adds a unique twist. How did that element of the story come to life?
I knew that I needed a formidable villain to raise the stakes of the plot. After much consideration, I concluded that a notorious, one-eyed gangster cat living a life of luxury aboard an abandoned barge would seamlessly fit into the narrative's theme of confronting one's fears. Thus, Big Bessie was introduced. The challenging question was what Lucca could possibly offer her in exchange for her secret.

Did any real-life animals or experiences influence your writing?
I have a deep passion for all animals, and my fascination with wildlife grew even stronger when I moved from the city to the countryside. As I witnessed natural areas being developed, I became increasingly concerned about the welfare of the creatures whose habitats were being destroyed.
During my walks with my dogs, I often encounter various domestic and wild animals, and I like to give them names that reflect their personalities. Once they have a name, the stories about them come to life naturally.
How did you approach writing the more intense scenes while keeping the story accessible for readers?
It is essential to be sensitive to the reader's feelings. As a storyteller, I would have failed if anyone were upset by something I had written. However, this does not mean the story needs to be compromised. Avoiding detailed descriptions allows the reader’s imagination to fill in the gaps, enhancing the overall experience. Danger can be exciting without being gory, and sadness can be heartbreaking without traumatising the reader.
What do you hope readers will take away from Lucca’s journey?
An understanding that we must all work together to achieve our goals, and everyone’s contribution is valid. I hope the story will help break down barriers and promote friendship and kindness.
The characters in the book feel very distinct and layered. How did you go about developing their personalities?
I act out scenes using a mirror next to my computer. As I practise the dialogue for the character I’m writing, I search for their unique voice. By refining this voice, the character begins to take shape. The mirror helps me observe my reactions and character traits, which seem to appear like magic.
What did you enjoy most about the writing process?
There's something magical about looking at a blank page and suddenly seeing a word form, then a line, and finally a complete sentence emerge; that’s when I know the journey has begun. I even find value in writer’s block. It gives me a good excuse to put the kettle on, grab a packet of digestives, and gaze out the window to think and create. The hardest part is convincing my wife that, as I munch and look out the window, I’m actually working. When the story is finished and my new creation is ready to enter the world, I feel a sense of parental pride. I truly love my job.
