Meet the Creator of The Pirates of Dinosaur Island – Q&A with Sheila Wenborne

Ahoy there! Set sail for an adventure like no other with The Pirates of Dinosaur Island, a fun-filled rhyming story from children’s author Sheila Wenborne. Packed with swashbuckling pirates, stomping dinosaurs, and plenty of mischief, this imaginative tale whisks readers away to an island brimming with excitement and unexpected friendships. With bold characters, playful language, and a brilliant blend of two childhood favourites, pirates and dinosaurs, this book is perfect for young explorers with big imaginations. In this Q&A, Sheila shares the inspiration behind the story, what she loves about writing for children, and her advice for new authors navigating their own creative journeys.

What inspired the idea of combining pirates and dinosaurs in your story?

Children's fascination with pirates and dinosaurs inspired me to create the PODI book series, a perfect blend of fun and learning for young readers. Each book in the series is not just a story but a parable, teaching important life lessons. The first book, for instance, focuses on the acceptance of others, a crucial value for children to learn.

How did you come up with the characters in the book?

The characters are based on people I know. Captain Clam, who is a very nice man but sometimes a twit, is based on a dear uncle of mine. Molly the Cook is definitely me. Pirate Pete is based on a work colleague. Nibbles the cat is my cat, Dodger, and Cheesy Wheeze is the phantom mouse who lives in our house, eats the cheese, but has never been caught or seen.

Who do you think will enjoy this book the most?

The PODI series is specially designed for preschoolers. They’re great to read at any time of day and perfect as bedtime stories. These delightful tales will leave your little ones with a smile as they drift off to sleep.

Was it important to you that the story was written in rhyme?

Yes, it was important to rhyme. Hearing and using rhyme, rhythm, and repetition helps children develop early literacy. Also, it’s fun to write.

What do you enjoy most about writing for children?

Writing children's books is a joyous experience that allows me to revisit the magical time when everything was possible and fun. It's a form of escapism that I find immensely enjoyable, and I hope to share this joy with my readers.

If you could visit Dinosaur Island, what would you be most excited to see?

If I could visit Dinosaur Island, I would love to spend time with the laughing bubble erupting volcano. It sounds like so much fun, and I really love bubbles.

What do you hope young readers will take away from this book?

To grasp the parable in the stories and to recognise that kindness, acceptance, and teamwork are essential guiding principles in life's journey.

What part of the writing and publishing process do you enjoy the most?

I love every part of the writing and publishing process. I'm excited when I have an idea, delighted when the beautiful illustrations are added, and ecstatic when I hold the finished book in my hands.

What advice would you give to someone writing their first children's book?

Imagine you are the same age as your readers. What made you smile and excited you? Take that inspiration, forget about being an adult, and start writing.
